How to teach children to save for something
Saving is easier with a goal. In the NatWest Rooster Money index for 2026, around 56% of the money saved by Rooster Card users went into pots with a goal, and holidays and travel were the top goal.
Three steps
- Set a goal together. MoneyHelper suggests small amounts at 5 to 6, and letting children choose what to save for at 7 to 8.
- Work out how long it will take. The pocket money calculator gives the exact day they’ll get there.
- Give the money a home. MoneyHelper suggests three jars, for treats, holidays and the long term, or separate accounts or pots.
Keep track of it in Akoro
Akoro shows the exact day a savings goal will be reached from your child’s pocket money. Savings goals are part of Akoro Pro.
