What age to start pocket money
MoneyHelper, the government-backed guidance service, suggests small amounts at 5 to 6, to help a child save for something. There’s no set age, and giving pocket money is your choice.
By age
- 5 to 6: small amounts, to save for something.
- 7 to 8: let them choose what to save for, and help work out how long it will take.
- 9 to 11: budgeting pocket money, phone credit and gift cards.
Starting out
Start small and keep it regular. MoneyHelper suggests weekly for younger children. In the NatWest Rooster Money index for 2026, regular pocket money among Rooster Card users averaged £2.69 a week at age 6.
The pocket money calculator shows what families report for your child’s age.
Keep track of it in Akoro
Akoro records each child’s pocket money, adds it on the day, and shows every balance at a glance. It records money: it doesn’t hold or move it. It’s free for one child.
