    How much allowance by age?

In a 2025 Wells Fargo study by Ipsos of 1,587 US parents, the median weekly allowance among those who give one was $15 at ages 5 to 8, $20 at 9 to 14 and $25 at 15 to 17. The average, $37.19, is much higher because 28% of those parents reported $50 or more a week.

Greenlight reports less for families using its card in 2025: an average of $6.44 a week at age 6, $8.53 at age 10 and $13.13 at age 14. Greenlight’s page lists every age.

    Do most parents give one?

In the same study, 43% of parents gave an allowance regularly, 28% occasionally and 29% not at all.

    Questions

How much allowance should I give?

Whatever you can spare, and enough for what the money has to cover. The figures above show what other families give.

Is $1 per year of age a good rule?

It’s a rule of thumb some parents use, not a survey result: $10 a week at age 10. Greenlight’s users average a little less at most ages, and Wells Fargo’s parents report more at every age.

Why do the figures differ so much?

They measure different people. Wells Fargo’s study asked a weighted sample of US parents. Greenlight counts families using its card.

Does this calculator keep what I type?

No. It runs in your browser and sends nothing.
