What age to start an allowance
Many parents start at 5 or 6, Greenlight says. There’s no official age: the US government’s Money as You Grow guidance treats an allowance as a parent’s choice.
What parents do
In a 2025 Wells Fargo study by Ipsos of 1,587 US parents:
- At ages 5 to 8, 33% gave an allowance regularly, 25% occasionally and 42% not at all.
- At ages 9 to 11, 50% gave one regularly, 29% occasionally and 21% not at all.
Starting out
Start small. A third of parents of 5 to 8 year olds who give an allowance pay under $10 a week. Money as You Grow’s advice is to talk often with your child about how they plan to use it, how it went and what they learned.
The allowance calculator shows what families report for your child’s age.
Keep track of it in Akoro
Akoro records each child’s allowance, adds it on the day, and shows every balance at a glance. It records money: it doesn’t hold or move it. It’s free for one child.
